Development a distant dream for Dambuk villagers

Prafulla Kaman

PASIGHAT, Nov 06: Eminent citizens, including Gaon Buarhs and PRI members of Dambuk Sub-division in Lower Dibang Valley district have expressed resentment over the indifferent attitude of the successive state governments towards their long standing problems.

The people allege that their leaders are ignoring the problems and issues of public interests thus betraying the people of rural area.

In a written statement, the members of ‘Dambuk People’s Welfare Committee’ (DPWC) led by Head GB Maktel Pertin alleged that the successive governments have miserably failed to address the various problems of their area. Road connectivity to the most important area in the district has not been developed till date, it rued.

Expressing serious concern over undue delay in construction of roads and bridges connecting Dambuk, the DPWC members said that neither the BRO nor the State PWD was sincere in their works. The sub-division remained isolated from rest of the world due to delay in construction of Bridge over Sissar River between Aohali and Dambuk. The state PWD is also found sluggish in their construction work of RCC Bridge over the same river (at its downstream) between Bomjir and Bijari.

The Dambuk sub-division, which falls under Dambuk Assembly Constituency, has a population of about 30,000 where various communities like Adi, Idu-Mishimi, Galo and Mishing are living together in peace and harmony. But, the sub-division has earned the dubious distinction of being the most backward sub-divion of the district due to lack of basic infrastructural facilities.

Talking to this correspondent, Dambuk Block Congress Secretary Tokbom Saring said that people of Dambuk are still living in middle-age lifestyle.

“Electricity and surface communication are still a distant dream for the villagers. Jumbo is the only means to cross the river-points. We have to pay Rs 500 to cross the river to go to either Roing or Pasighat for various purposes,” Saring exclaimed.

Dambuk area is located at about 50 km North-east of Pasighat, while it is 40 km south of Roing. Located on a hilly terrain, the place is enriched with natural flora and fauna. The area is considered as one of the rice bowls in Eastern Arunachal districts. The fertile soils of the hilly land also support growing of cash crops, rubi and khariff vegetables besides oilseeds and different medicinal herbs.

Cooperatives crucial allies in fight against hunger

Small-scale food producers can gain access to local and global markets with the help of cooperatives, says FAO.  One of the only chances small-scale food producers have to gain competitive access to local and global markets is by banding together in cooperatives, FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva told a meeting of the World Cooperatives Congress in Manchester. He said that Cooperatives follow core values and principles that are critical to doing business in an equitable manner that seeks to empower and benefits its members and the community. In the case of agriculture, the cooperative business model helps small- and medium-scale farmers, fishers and others add value to their production and gain access to markets. Many food producers, through their cooperatives, are now even taking part in policy-making discussions that affect their lives.

The FAO chief said that his Organization was committed to fostering the growth of agricultural cooperatives, including through appointing special ambassadors for cooperatives to spread the word and by developing approaches, guidelines, methodologies and training tools on organizational development and policy support.

He called on his audience to contribute to the global plan of action that will emerge from the International Year of Cooperatives, perhaps by assisting less advanced fellow cooperatives in developing countries.

Pauline Green, President of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA), also stressed the importance of increased participation of the people in the decision making process.

"Whether you are in the UK, Brazil, Kenya,Thailand or Nepal, cooperatives help to generate employment, boost national economies and reduce poverty," he told.
